twitter - mindless distraction or communication breakthrough?
By jhedley | February 23, 2007
Given the rise and rise of twitter and its continuing drain on mine and others time, perhaps it would be prudent to analyse quite what purpose it serves…
The principle is simple enough - get yourself an account, then answer the question, “What are you doing?”, again and again… and again. And that’s it. Each post goes into the public timeline where the whole world can see it.
The posts can be filtered to show only those twitterers you have chosen by marking as a friend, be they work colleagues, or ‘celebrities’ such as Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker, (depending on your alliance), or of course yours truly.
The friends you choose to follow do not necessarily have to reciprocate by adding you, which allows a certain amount of harmless cyber-stalking, and likewise you could build up quite a band of ‘followers’ who rightly or wrongly are interested in hearing what you are up to whether they know you or not. So far, so trivial but as a communication tool, twitter may yet come into its own…
As you can send posts to your twitter timeline from any online computer, your instant messenger (IM) client, or even a mobile phone as a text message (SMS) - and this post will reach the RSS reader, twitter homepage or even the mobile phone of all your subscribed followers, then it becomes a decent way of getting messages to the masses.

Integrating falbum with Wordpress 2.1
By jhedley | February 13, 2007
When I first started to use wordpress, one of the most impressive features was the large number of plug-ins and other add-ons that people are constantly putting into the public domain. One of these was Falbum, which I was hoping to use to display certain photos from my Flickr account on my own web pages. It took a bit of tinkering to get it functioning exactly as I wanted, and below is the solution to a particularly fundamental problem that cropped up. Some users may find that not all of the tables are being created within the MySql database necessary for Falbum to function within wordpress 2.1. - This indicated by the error message:
[Table ‘itsreall_wrdp1.wp_falbum_cache’ doesn’t exist]
If this is the case, and you are able to get access to the database (e.g. through phpMyAdmin), then you can run this command that will create the table you need…
CREATE TABLE wp_falbum_cache (
ID varchar(40) PRIMARY KEY,
data text,
expires datetime
);
This should add the table, increasing the number in the database from 10 to 11 (default settings) and you should be up and running…
